Elkins Mowing: Success Built on Family and Hard Work

Austin Elkins was just a young child when he first started mowing lawns with his grandfather. At only four years old, he’d tag along, learning the lawn care business from an early age. This family tradition grew into a passion and a successful business in East Central Indiana.

By age 12, Austin was waking up early, mowing yards before school, and returning to mow lawns in the evening. His work ethic and dedication evolved into Elkins Mowing and Landscaping, which became an LLC in 2021.

Austin's commitment to growing the business led him to the East Central Indiana Small Business Development Center (SBDC) after a referral from 3Rivers Federal Credit Union. Since then, he has been working with James Womack, an advisor at the East Central Indiana SBDC.

“Working with James has really helped my company,” Austin shared. “I’ve been talking with him for the past year, and we’ve had multiple meetings about the business. He’s helped us with sales and professionalism, and offers business advice, and works around my schedule.”

James Womack appreciates Austin’s hard work and positivity. “We have steadily worked on developing a business plan to help Elkins Mowing managed day-to-day tasks,” James noted. “It is exciting to watch Austin develop as an entrepreneur while doing what he loves.”

Today, Austin and his team manage 116 acres of lawn care, providing mowing, trimming, pruning, snow removal, and leaf cleanup services. Austin attributes his success to the lessons he learned from his father and grandfather. It’s no surprise, then, that Austin’s crew includes those closest to him. His father, David Elkins, is the team’s most seasoned employee, having been with the company for two years. Austin’s significant other, Kloey, is also an employee. And Blaine, who joined the company last year, works part-time as the business continues to grow.

“At the end of the day, I really truly appreciate my employees and want to take care of them,” Austin said. “Without them, none of this would be possible.”
