Hines Homestead and Sweet Treats

The Sweet Success of Hines Homestead and Sweet Treats

Jordan owns Hines Homestead and Sweet Treats, and her sweet business idea came from the most unexpected place. Her journey began with a simple question from her daughter: “Did you bring me a cake pop?” One day, Jordan decided they should make their own. That evening, she shared the extras with friends — and they were such a hit that she soon started receiving requests for more. That baking project sparked what would become a thriving small business.

Hines Homestead and Sweet Treats now specializes in cake pops, rolled buttercream sugar cookies, and cookie cakes. Using two edible image printers, she can turn any design or logo into a fully customized treat perfect for corporate events, themed parties, or personal celebrations. In addition to baked goods, Jordan also offers cotton candy party rentals and live spinning services for events.

From Farmers Market to First-Place Winner: Jordan joined her local farmers' market, and it was at one of these farmers' markets that opportunity knocked. A local county representative stopped by her booth and encouraged Jordan to apply for the Randolph County United “Open for Business” Pitch Competition.

“I quickly recognized the opportunity to turn this into a small side business since there weren’t many local bakers offering similar products,” Jordan said. “Even if I didn’t win, I knew I’d gain valuable business knowledge and experience through the eight-week competition process.”

That decision would prove to be a turning point for both Jordan and Hines Homestead and Sweet Treats. She earned first place and the audience choice award. With the prize money, she plans to expand her offerings by including fundraising opportunities, partnering with schools and organizations to provide unique, high-quality treats that support local causes.

Turning Business Lessons into Sweet Success: Through the “Open for Business” competition, Jordan connected with the East Central Indiana Small Business Development Center (SBDC). Over eight weeks, Jordan refined her vision, set clear goals, and learned how to run her business more strategically.

“Working with the East Central Indiana SBDC was incredibly valuable,” Jordan shared. “Their guidance helped me better understand business planning, financial tracking, marketing strategies, and growth opportunities.”

Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs: When asked what she’d tell others considering entering a pitch contest, Jordan doesn’t hesitate. “Do it!! The experience is absolutely worth it,” she said. “Even if you don’t win, you’ll walk away with knowledge, resources, and connections that will help your business grow. The support and encouragement you receive are truly invaluable.”

For entrepreneurs at any stage, Jordan’s advice is simple; “I highly recommend working with the SBDC to any entrepreneur, whether they’re just starting or looking to take their business to the next level. The experience was both educational and empowering.”

From expanding into fundraisers to exploring new products, she’s focused on creating joy. “I’m incredibly excited to begin this next venture,” she said. “It’s a chance to not only grow my business but to give back and support the people who’ve supported me from the start.”
