Tanya and Bill Mentgen, owners of the successful 3 Fat Labs Bed & Breakfast in Greencastle, Ind., are celebrating five years of being in business and the grand opening of a new wedding and event barn on their beautifully-forested acreage just west of Greencastle.
The $1.5 million, 14,000-square-foot barn, designed by Indiana architect Judi Klein with locally-sourced construction materialsm is the brainchild of the Mentgens, who recognized the demand for a unique event space in Putnam County.
Their objective is to provide a new wedding and event experience in Greencastle, speaking to the latest “rural chic” trends and attracting new visitors to the county. The Mentgens started their relationship with the West Central Indiana Small Business Development Center (SBDC) when they constructed their bed and breakfast. The partnership continued as an SBDC business advisor helped develop marketing plans and provide QuickBooks training for their growing business.
When they needed to expand, their first step was to consult the West Central SBDC to develop their loan package. The advisor worked to create sale projections and demonstrate the validity of the project to regional investors. Once they broke ground, the advisor continued to provide support by helping create customer-focused marketing plans. Since opening, the value attributed to Putnam County is beyond a typical venue. The event center has become a destination for local families to come together and enjoy entertainment like the Music in the Woods series.
