Pablo Picasso once said, “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.”

Owners Bob and Vicki Hartley bring a background of community involvement and small business experience to The Artist Within, Inc. Bob’s thirty five years of teaching high school art and encouraging individuals, ranging from ages 5 to 75+,to explore their creative self is a large part of what The Artist Within is all about.

The contemporary paint your own pottery industry is currently experiencing growth. Family activities and alternatives to video games and movies are, fortunately, on the rise and the Artist Within, Inc. provides an exciting and fun place to go, create, and shop.  Bob and Vicki’s upscale approach, friendly staff and well stocked and equipped studio create a positive atmosphere for those seeking a change of pace activity.

The Artist Within, Inc. also offers classes in traditional pottery making as well as displaying local art in a gallery setting. There is also a small retail section of the store where you can purchase art and jewelry made by local artisans. In addition, Bob plays an active role in the ongoing revitalization and rebirth of the downtown area by being involved in the promotion of the arts through Muncie Arts and Culture Council

The Artist Within, Inc. provides Muncie with a fun and exciting place where one’s creative self can explore various avenues of contemporary ceramics.

In 2008, The Artist Within was one of the many businesses in Muncie that felt the hardship of the economy. As a result of the slowdown in business, Bob resorted to credit cards and personal funds to keep his business open.

In 2009, Bob sought the help of the East Central Indiana Small Business Development Center to apply for the ARC Loan. Through the application process, Bob was able to get his books in order, learn how to effectively read the financial. When the loan was approved, Bob was able to use the proceeds to get his business back on track for success.

It has been almost three years and The Artist Within is still open and helping people remain artists.
