Burk Smith and Jim Goodwin contacted the East Central Indiana SBDC in March of 2008 to discuss a business idea that they had been researching for several months – a children’s entertainment facility with inflatable jumpers, video and arcade games. Burt and Jim and their children visited similar facilities in other cities and thought that their hometown, New Castle, IN, would be a great for such a place for a facility like this. During the next several weeks, Ted Baker, assistant director for the East Central Indiana SBDC center, worked with Burk and Jim to create a business plan for their business. Ted helped them understand the various issues that were involved in starting a business. Together, they worked on income statements, balance sheets and cash flow statements.
Having the full support of their wives and children and prepared with a sound business plan, Burk and Jim decided to start “Bounce About.” They located a facility to lease at 1701 South Main Street in New Castle. They know this location would be ideal for “Bounce About” – it was close to the local ball diamonds, across the street from the new city swimming pool, and close to local parks and schools. The building was also in move-in condition.
“Bounce About” opened its doors for business on May 13, 2008 and has already booked several large birthday parties. They will celebrate their Grand Opening on May 31. This is a dream come true for Burk, who is a New Castle firefighter, and Jim, who serves his community as a law enforcement officer.
Smith and Goodwin commented, “Our basic business knowledge was somewhat limited, but we thought we had a great idea that would serve our community. Mr. Baker, with the resources of the Small Business Development Center, guided us through the business planning process – from dreaming about our business to actually opening our business. He was great.”
