Founded in 2010 by David and Michelle Muir, Fruit Hills Winery & Orchard sits on the former Judson Family Fruit Farm two miles south of Bristol, Ind. off of State Road 15. Family owned and operated, this farm winery currently has two acres of vineyards with plans for expansion. The farm itself has been in the Muirs’ family for more than 150 years dating back to 1852. Visitors may visit the winery’s tasting room where they have the opportunity to sample Fruit Hills’ different varieties of wines. Complementing its rural setting, the farm winery has a large, outdoor deck for enjoying live music and taking in the scenic views with friends and family.
The Muirs worked with Alan Steele at the North Central Indiana SBDC to transform their idea of opening a winery into reality. They received expert assistance in financial planning which helped them secure a Small Business Administration (SBA) loan from a community bank.
In a recent editorial published by the South Bend Tribune, David Muir said, “Alan listened to what we had in mind and advised us on what it would take to make it a reality. He supplied us with a template for a financial spreadsheet for a business plan and we went to work putting one together. We met about every other week to discuss progress on the plan and how to improve it.”
