Let’s Work Together

Solid Surfaces of Indiana

Jul 12th, 2010

Joe Papp and Charles Muratore contacted the Central Indiana SBDC in January 2006 to review their business plan which outlined their proposed launch of a solid surface fabrication and installation company in the Indianapolis area. They requested assistance in developing an activity checklist in opening their operation, as well as eventually helping them locate supplemental financing for their new business.
Larry White, business advisor for the Central Indiana SBDC, provided guidance in working through the details of their business plan, particularly in understanding the projected income statements and cash flow statements within the document.

They located a leased facility at 1942 North 600 West in Indianapolis, and started operations in July 2006 using their own money to purchase their equipment and initial supplies/materials to get started. Larry introduced them to National City Bank in Indianapolis, who reviewed their plan and approved them for an initial line of credit in September 2006.

At their first year anniversary point, they have made excellent progress toward their business plan goals. Joe & Charles report that they have exceeded their initial sales goal in gross revenue for their first full year of operation (7/1/06—6/30/07) and began turning a monthly profit during the first quarter of 2007. They have hired four full-time employees and two part-time workers since opening day, and anticipate converting part-time staff to full-time status shortly.

Solid Surfaces of Indiana now provides countertops and vanity tops for four local Lowes stores and eight different area kitchen/bath dealers. They are proud that they have not had a single callback or complaint with 150 residential installations to date. In addition, they have completed commercial work for a number of major Indiana companies, such as Eli Lilly, Sallie Mae and the Indiana State Teachers Association (ISTA).

The SBDC continues to assist them in securing additional bank financing to increase their manufacturing capacity, productivity and improve order turnaround time. This will help take them to the “next level” and enhance their ability to serve even larger customers while seeking business opportunities in states surrounding Indiana.

“The Central Indiana SBDC has played a vital role in helping Solid Surfaces of Indiana achieve it’s year one goals. With the help of Larry White, we received information and advice that has been critical to our success. We would highly recommend partnering with the SBDC before and throughout the business start up process here in Indiana.”
